Understanding and Managing Seasonal Affective Disorder During Warmer Months

When we think of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), most people picture gloomy skies, long winters, and a lack of sunlight. But did you know that SAD can also occur during summer?

Yes—Summer-Onset Seasonal Affective Disorder is real, and it can be just as disruptive to your mental health as the winter form.

At PsycHealth Services, we want to help you understand this lesser-known experience, identify the signs, and offer real solutions to help you thrive—even when the sun is shining.

🌡️ What Is Summer SAD?

Summer SAD, also known as reverse SAD, is a form of depression triggered by the warmer, sunnier months—typically late spring through early fall. While it's less common than winter SAD, it's just as valid and impactful.

People with summer SAD may experience:

  • Irritability or agitation
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia)
  • Anxiety or racing thoughts
  • Social withdrawal or feeling overwhelmed by social expectations
  • A persistent low mood despite "perfect" weather

😓 What Causes Summer SAD?

Researchers believe the causes differ from winter SAD and may include:

  • Heat sensitivity or overheating, especially in individuals prone to anxiety
  • Disrupted circadian rhythms from longer daylight hours
  • Social pressures to be active, outgoing, or "happy"
  • Body image struggles and increased exposure
  • Changes in routine (like school breaks or travel plans) that bring stress or instability

How to Manage Summer SAD

If you're feeling emotionally offbeat during summer, know that you're not alone—and there are things you can do.

Here are some practical strategies to support your mental health during the warmer months:

1. Create a Cool, Calm Environment

Use blackout curtains, fans, and AC to keep your space soothing and sleep-friendly. Overstimulation from heat and light can intensify symptoms and disrupt rest.

2. Stick to a Routine

Summer often brings chaotic schedules. Try to maintain regular sleep, meal, and activity times to help regulate mood and energy.

3. Set Boundaries on Social Commitments

Just because it’s BBQ season doesn’t mean you have to say yes to everything. Protect your peace by pacing yourself and prioritizing rest.

4. Focus on Nutrition & Hydration

What you put into your body matters. Aim for balanced meals, avoid over-caffeination, and stay hydrated to support emotional and physical wellness.

5. Seek Professional Support

Talking with a therapist can help you process emotions, uncover triggers, and build strategies to manage mood shifts. And that’s where PsycHealth Services comes in.

Who Is Affected?

While exact numbers vary, it's estimated that:

  • About 1 in 10 people with SAD experience symptoms during the summer rather than winter.
  • Women are more likely to be affected than men.
  • Summer SAD may be more common in regions with very hot climates, extreme daylight hours, or strong cultural emphasis on being social and active.

These symptoms often get dismissed because summer is supposed to be fun. But for those experiencing summer-onset SAD, the pressure to feel happy and energetic can actually make the symptoms worse.
